in vivo Regeneration

This research strategy uses the body as a bioreactor to produce the desired tissues inside by inducing growth of the tissue via growth factors delivered through connection to the existing body. In Vivo generation remains a challenge because of the significant complexities to the systems and limited knowledge of the fundamental biology associated with each.

Current research into these areas has yielded promising results, but requires much more work. Much of the benefit of current cell therapy, is due to paracrine or allocrine effects. This committes is most interested in further exploring, cytokines/chemokines, extracellular vesicles, and microRNAs and how they may be used to help enhance our capabilities to repair or replace damaged organs. See our committee members here.
